Station Indicator

If you came here by subway you may have had trouble finding the right station, since often the station name is not easily seen from the crowded car. If you came by bus, or on foot, missing or changed street signs may have added to the aggravation. If you came by cab, just count yourself among the lucky to have made it.

One hundred and twenty years ago, sitting in the Victorian comfort of your tramway car, this station indicator (patented March 14, 1871 by Joseph Bell Alexander, of Washington D.C.) would have given you the information, clearly, simply and unambiguously. You would have known just where the "Cooper Institute" was.
